The Role of Local Context in EMI Implementation

Joyce Kling - Other

Local linguistic diversity and growing teacher and student mobility in higher education around the world have resulted in increasingly multilingual teaching and learning contexts. In order to understand how to locally approach the integration of content and language (ICL) for teaching and learning, we must consider a range of contextual factors that may contribute to the differences in language policies and practices in higher education (Dimova & Kling, 2020). In this talk, I will reflect on experiences in ICL from multilingual HE institutions from around the world. From a range of case studies, I will touch on what I believe to be some key aspects of ICLHE, particularly in EMI courses and programs across specific contexts. Throughout the presentation, I will draw on results from a large-scale project at the University of Copenhagen to demonstrate how foreign language(s) have been supported locally for students in their academic programs in an effort to target the local and the international labor market.
