Translation: Roles, processes and consequences
Coordinator: Kristian T. Hvelplund
This translation research platform concerns translation between languages. The platform has a broad research scope and addresses topics in literary translation, multimedia translation and cognitive translation studies. A central aim of the platform is to strengthen translation research at the University of Copenhagen, increase its relevance nationally and globally, and stimulate the interplay between translation research, translation teaching and the translation industry. The platform’s work is characterised by a cross-disciplinary approach to translational research, and seminars and workshops are organised gathering researchers, translators and students.
Research topics that fall within the scope of the research platform include:
- The many genres of translation, including audiovisual translation
- The role of the translator
- Agents in the translation process
- The translation process and its impact on the translation product
- Translation quality
- Expertise in translation
- Translation flow and translation policies
- The impact of translation(s) on the language and culture of minor speech communities
The platform members’ research encompasses a broad range of topics. These include translator expertise, genre familiarity in translation (examining literary translators’ and technical translators’ cognitive processing), multiple translatorship (i.e. the collaboration & interaction between the agents involved in the translation process), the significance of translation aptitude in translator training, the impact of emotional state-of-mind on translation processing, the selection, distribution and reception of translated literature (analyzing e.g. the correlation between the selection of texts to be translated and national stereotyping).
The platform members’ research methods include product-oriented approaches (e.g. stylistic analyses and corpus linguistic methods) as well as process-oriented approaches (eye tracking, key logging, think-aloud protocols and questionnaires).
