Enduring totalitarianism: Francoism, Spain’s prisons and the gaze of the West

Seminar with Helen Graham (Royal Holloway, University of London)

The persistent misrecognition of Francoism as an old-fashioned dictatorship is the clearest indication of the ‘trouble’ it still causes Western political order/legitimacy. My talk will explore the prison system, forced labour, preventive detention and other disciplinary regimes in Franco’s Spain from the 1940s to the 1970s, to explain the dictatorship and the ‘trouble’ it still signifies.
