Gertrude Stein was everywhere in the 1960s: Several of her works, which she had difficulties getting published in her lifetime, were published by the Something Else Press owned and directed by the American Fluxus artist Dick Higgins. This testifies to her influence on the Fluxus movement. Her impact was, however, much wider. Members of the sixties avant-garde, whether writers, painters, sculptors, composers, performance artists or filmmakers, were inspired by her work and recognised in her a kindred spirit and a forerunner.
