Race, Slavery and Freedom in the Old South


Professor Loren Schweninger (Elizabeth Rosenthal Excellence Professor of American History, University of North Carolina , Greensboro, and Distinguished Fulbright Professor of American Studies, University of Uppsala) will be lecturing on “Race, Slavery and Freedom in the Old South”

Professor Schweninger is the author of Black Property Owners in the South, 1790-1915 (1990; 1997); Runaway Slaves: Rebels on the Plantation (with John Hope Franklin, 1999); and In Search of the Promised Land: A Slave Family in the Old South (with John Hope Franklin, 2005). He is the editor of The Southern Debate Over Slavery (2 vols., 2001, 2006). He is the director of the Race and Slavery Petitions Project (http://library.uncg.edu/slavery).
