Guest lecture by Pat Thomas
Lecture by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey!: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power, 1965-1975.
The talk is based on Thomas' well-received recent book of the same name; the book has also generated an excellent spin-off CD/double-LP compilation featuring a range of activists and musicians from the Black Power era, including Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, Gil Scott-Heron, Amiri Baraka, The Watts Prophets, Bob Dylan, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, and Elaine Brown.
Pat will be giving a heavily audio-visual presentation based on the book; it will take place at 4pm (starting 4.15pm) in room 27.0.17 (capacity: 60). All staff and students are welcome, so please do advertise to your students. You can read more about Pat and the book at the publisher's website (http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/listen-whitey-the-sights-and-sounds-of-black-power-1965-1975.html?vmcchk=1): the website includes a video and slideshow, a downloadable PDF of the introduction and first chapter of _Listen Whitey!_, and links to various reviews. The webpage for the "soundtrack" of the book is here: http://lightintheattic.net/releases/685-listen-whitey-the-sounds-of-black-power-1967-1974. It includes brief audio clips of the featured songs.
