The Exceptional North: Past and Present Perspectives on Nordicness
Book launch.
Join us for a celebratory drink marking the publication of The Exceptional North: Past and Present Perspectives on Nordicness, edited by Robert W. Rix, Eva-Lena Bergström, Cian Duffy, and Merethe Roos. Bringing together 19 Nordic researchers, the book explores how the idea of ‘Nordic exceptionalism’ has taken shape from the eighteenth century to today, revealing how external perceptions and Nordic self-representations have jointly shaped this influential concept. It shows that idealisation and critique have always coexisted, and that the Nordic countries have long been viewed – and have viewed themselves – as a distinct cultural unit.
The book is an open-access publication available. Read the book.
The editors will offer a brief presentation of the book, after which we will continue with an informal celebration.
All are welcome.
