At the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies we have a varied selection of research programmes into literary, linguistic, historical and cultural topics with reference to all parts of the world. As the original home of the main languages studied, Europe is naturally the main focus of research at the department.

Our research covers themes such as the modern epic, the places of literature, twentieth century European history, colonial history and identity processes in former colonies, functional linguistics, foreign language acquisition, translation studies, lexicography, linguistic change and many others.
