The Weimar Republic and the First Crises of Globalization
A talk with Frank Biess, University of California, San Diego
A democracy confronted with a deadly pandemic and a multitude of crisis phenomena, searching for its place in a world marked by massive global upheavals – this description of the Weimar Republic sounds quite familiar from today’s perspective.
The lecture discusses the Weimar Republic’s response to the first crisis of globalization following World War I. It also addresses the global factors that contributed to the destruction of democracy and the rise of National Socialism. At the same time, however, the lecture highlights the very real alternative responses to the multifaceted crises of the interwar period. Weimar’s collapse and the triumph of far-right forces were therefore by no means inevitable – and therein lies one of the lessons of Weimar for our present day.
