Approximation and distancing in doctor-patient communication in Portuguese, Spanish and Galician: forms of address and other strategies

Abstract

Using data from audio-recorded medical consultations in Galicia and in a satellite city of Lisbon, this presentation takes a first look at some of the strategies of approximation and distancing that patients and doctors have employed.  The data presented include samples from Spanish, Portuguese and Galician.
