Are we close to the perfect machine translation system?

Activity: Talk or presentation typesLecture and oral contribution

Marian Flanagan - Speaker

Most of the texts translated today are done so using Machine Translation (MT). What does this mean for human translators? Are we reaching a point where human translators will no longer be required and we will celebrate the ‘perfect machine translation system’?

I address these questions and discuss the current state-of-art MT systems, how they are being used, the arguments being put forward for using MT in a professional context, the ethical considerations and implications of using large language models for translation, and the role of the human translator in all of this.
