The ageing voice – teasing apart the chronological, the social, and the biological

Talk with Anna Bothe Jespersen.

Abstract

Age is a central variable in many fields of linguistics, but linguists have tended to view a person's age as identical with their chronological age, that is, the number of years they have lived. This talk invites discussions of whether speakers' biological "body age" and social age might be better ways of engaging with this key variable.
