Managing Multilingualism in Nordic Healthcare
The network gathers and shares new knowledge about multilingualism, second language learning and workplace communication in the healthcare sector in the Nordic region. By engaging with practice partners, the network ensures that the new knowledge reaches a broad audience.
Understanding the new multilingual reality in the Nordic healthcare systems.
Using the framework of sociolinguistic change, we seek to understand how societal change in the form of changing migration patterns and changes in aging populations interact with change in language practices and language ideologies in the healthcare sector. The advent of new language technologies, including those based on AI, affords new opportunities for overcoming barriers related to multilingualism, but new technology can also be a challenge in itself. By taking into account societal change, change in linguistic practices and ideologies as well as change in technologically mediated communication, we aim for an integrated account of the multilingual challenge facing Nordic healthcare.
While the Nordic societies share similar forms of governance and organisation of welfare services, policies and programmes for language training and labour market insertion for work migrants and refugees differ significantly between the countries. The Managing Multilingualism in Nordic Healthcare network will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience of researchers, practitioners and policy makers across the Nordic countries. By compiling and contrasting research and practice results, the network will 1) compare developments in the Nordic countries; 2) discuss how to use sociolinguistic insights to facilitate the practical and political aspects of the recruitment and integration of migrant healthcare workers; 3) develop a thorough understanding of globalisation, language and the Nordic welfare state in the 21st century which can feed into sociolinguistic theorisation.
