Hateful speech in political debates on social media

Presentation of a PhD-project by Mattia Retta, University of Helsinki.

The doctoral study is a pragmatic and discursive analysis of implicitly conveyed hateful speech in political debates on social media. The corpus comprises social media content produced by Italian politicians alongside selected comments posted by other social media users in response. The annotation method and the subsequent analysis are based on a neo-Gricean pragmatic perspective on implicit meanings and on some tools drawn from Critical Discourse Analysis.
