Dissemination to the Danish and Nordic field of language teaching practice
In autumn 2022, Natascha Drachmann has given and hosted several presentations and workshops on plurilingual education and language awareness in a national and Nordic context. The participants have been in- and pre-service teachers and teacher educators in all language subjects in primary and lower secondary school. Based on the two operationalizations developed in the PE-LAL project, the presentations/workshops aimed at providing the participants with practical inspiration on how to work with plurilingual education and language awareness in language teaching in primary and lower secondary education. At the workshops, the participants reflected on the concept of plurilingualism and on the potentials and challenges of teaching in the context of plurilingual education. Also, the participants developed plurilingual activities for language teaching and made analyses of teaching material based on the operationalizations of the PE-LAL project.
Why does plurilingual education make sense for you as a coming teacher?
- Because we live in an increasingly multilingual society
- The use of several languages, also not only the target language can result in increased motivation and building of relationships between students and the teacher
- It is proven that it makes language learning easier - which is what I want as a language teacher
- Gives the students a new perspective on their identity and their understanding of language + culture
- Using languages in the classroom can show an interest in not only language but in culture - can create an environment of openness and valuing multiculturality + multilingualism
- Transcends cultural and linguistic barriers
