Today's Far Right in Spain

Guest lecture by Alejandro Ayala-Wold (University of Bergen).

This  lecture analyzes how conservative and far-right female politicians in  Spain, together with right-wing digital “influencers,” legitimize polarizing narratives of historical memory. Throughout traditionalist  political discourse, gendered performance and the use of  popular-cultural media (TikTok, IG and "X"), they help normalize radical  discourses in the public sphere, thereby reinforcing and intensifying the struggle over national identity and legitimacy.

Alejandro Ayala-Wold is an phd-candidate at the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen. He joined the department in august 2022 after obtaining a master’s degree from the University of Oslo, that placed emphasis on the Popular Party and Historical Memory in Spain between 2017 and 2018. His research lies at the intersection of political communication, radical politics, borders, disinformation, communication, democratization, and political history. Alejandro is highly interested in understanding how rightist parties uses historical memory to legitimate their political projects; how the radical-right polarizes European politics.
