This research project examines how Western, anglophone academics haven often used hospitality-adjacent terminology such as 'guest' and 'host' to describe notions of translation since the 1970s. What happens to our understanding of translation concepts if we look at them through the cultural lens of the Indo-European guest-friendship?

Digital Translation Cultures and the Publishing Field, Tatsiana Haiden

Small publishers often prioritise the cultural and symbolic value of their projects over economic profit. Does the increasing presence of digital infrastructures in both translation and publishing influence this balance? Do other actors within the publishing field influence how publishing organisations adopt AI-driven translation tools? This talk introduces a working concept "Digital Translation Culture", which will be presented and opened for discussion. It also presents a research design to study how translation-specialised niche publishers operate within emerging digital translation cultures, and how they make decisions regarding the use of the AI in their translations.
